Australian College of Dramatic Arts
COURSE OUTLINE:
The Australian College of Dramatic Arts is an Enterprise Registered Training Organisation specialising in acting for film and television delivered in the Vocational, Education and Training (VET) area. ACDA is the first and only organisation in Australia to offer such courses and is currently delivering them for the Yarra Valley cluster of schools based at Lilydale High School and for the Inner Melbourne VET cluster based at Fairhills High School and MBCTA Youth Theatre.
The Performing Arts Scoping Study identified the lack of performing arts training at the VET level. These two courses help address the shortfall and enhance the range of performing arts courses on offer.
The courses consist of units of competency that make sense to year 10, 11, 12 and 13 students:
- practical assessments in front of camera
- interesting range of topics covered
- pathways and peripheral jobs information
- industry guest speakers
- block credit arrangement: cluster schools can offer a VET subject that attracts unit 1 and 2 sequence for Certificate II and for Certificate III a unit 3 and 4 sequence
- confidence builder
- broad-based knowledge pool
- knowledge of how the industry works, first hand knowledge, no guesswork
- State Register of Accredited Courses and Recognised Qualifications Nationally Recognised Training
- VET in Schools Excellence Award winner from VERVE knowledge and skills (ITAB) 2006
The general purpose of the course is to provide the skills, knowledge and attitudes for training in acting for film and television. The training is designed for students with strong intentions of pursuing acting or related jobs and will provide the skills and knowledge in a broad range acting tasks relating to film and television. Many of the skills and knowledge attained are transferable to related arts industries.
The courses have packaged units of competency that are up to date, relevant and in line with skills and knowledge that are much more useful for todayís students. Embedded within the units of competency are skills to help give knowledge for economic and social development so that young people can equip themselves for changes when they go to work. The courses offer students the opportunity to develop skills that will not only prepare them for acting but for any workplace situation.
Consultation with the VET unit of the VQA (VASS) has verified that students are eligible for block credit towards their VCE or VCAL.
State School students are eligible for VET funding.
The course will not only enable students to participate in vocational training, but will also
provide them with a solid foundation for the development of work in all areas of the industry.
The college does not adhere to any one philosophy or style of teaching. It aims to offer the best
preparation and training for actors so that they are well equipped to face the rigorous and varied
demands that the profession makes upon them.
